Hate to tell you, but it doesn't look ancient in the least.

The bands , , and , which emerged in the early 1990s, also adopted Viking themes, broadening the style from its primarily black metal origin.

Many songs are composed in English, but Viking metal bands often write lyrics in other languages, usually of the family — , , , and, less commonly, and — and also in , which is non-Germanic.

It was said that great poets were blessed by Odin and shared in his mead, while less-talented poets only got the spittle that Odin dropped behind.

As examples of the first type, Mulvany examined the structures of sea shanties such as "", the 1934 and 1996 film soundtrack versions of "", 's "Viking" song for the 1958 film , and the chant from Monty Python's "" sketch, and found similar structures in compositions by Viking and black metal bands such as Einherjer, , , and Vargevinter.

Inspired by the Viking themes used by Manowar, some bands identified with the Vikings far more completely than Manowar.
